Tips For Upgrading Your Computer's Memory

One of the most common computer repair tasks involves upgrading your computer's memory. There are lots of reasons you might want to do a little upgrading of this nature. For example, more memory means a faster processing time. From faster loading for web pages to better gaming, it can certainly enhance your overall computing experience. More memory also means that your computer is able to easily move from application to application without a hitch. If your machine is networked, you'll experience a higher level of efficiency, and even if you're not, you'll certainly noticed better printing capabilities when you install more memory. The best news, though, is that upgrading your computer's memory is not only a fairly common computer repair task, it's an incredibly easy one.

The first step is to figure out how much memory your machine has. Right click on your 'My Computer' desktop icon. Choose 'Properties' The first tab you see should say 'General' and at the bottom of that tab, you may notice how much RAM (Random Access Memory) your computer currently has. That's an important number in this equation, and if you think you can't remember it, it might be best to write it down.

The second step is to understand how much memory your computer is capable of holding. Different computers can take on different memory capacities, but exceeding your computer's memory capacity can be dangerous, and all in all, it's a waste of your money to use more memory than your computer can hold. There are a couple of ways to go about this. First, there are some free online scanners out there that will let you know what your computer's memory capacity is, but some of them come with embedded bugs, so it's important to be careful. Another option is to glance at the manual that came with your machine. It should give you some good numbers. Alternately, you can log onto the computer manufacturer's website to get the specs for your individual machine.

There's one more part to this equation before you can rush out and buy the memory your computer needs for an upgrade. You may have come across this already if you've been reading your computer's manual, but if you haven't, you must get this information before you make any purchases. Understand what kind of memory your computer needs. Some machines have SDRAM. Others have DDR. Older machines have EDO or FPM. In order to determine what type of memory your machine currently has, you'll need to either consult your computer's manual, the manufacturer's web site or you can scan your computer with one of those free scanners.

Now you are ready to make a purchase. You have to decide how much memory you want on your computer. Of course, during this process, you should keep in mind how much your machine can hold, but if you're a basic user, you're probably going to want to run at least 256 MB. If you're a bit more advanced, and you use your machine for images and video on a regular basis, you may want to head into 512 MB land. If you are heavily into graphic design, head up toward a gig or so.

Once you've made your purchase, it is time to install it into the computer. Turn your machine off, and be sure it is unplugged. Take the case off. Find the memory slots. If you are taking out your old memory, press the ejector clips, and the stick will pop out. You're ready to put your new memory sticks in, and you can do this by finding the notch on the module's pin-side. They'll line up with the socket for the memory, put it in, and press firmly. The ejector clips will lock in around your new memory stick. Turn your computer back on, and you should be ready for a faster computing experience.

How to Connect a USB Modem Wireless Router Ethernet

I currently have a USB broadband modem. I purchased a wireless router which has ethernet connections. Currently, the modem is plugged into my computer downstairs which is running Windows 98, therefore, it won't bridge the connections to my computer upstairs(XP). I can't update to XP because a family member wont 'risk' it.

Can I connect the USB broadband modem to my wireless router using a complicated selection of cable adapters ie ethernet to USB (I cant find a USB TO ETHERNET adapter). If this is not possible, if I plug the USB modem into my XP computer, can I bridge the connections to my Win 98 computer using the XP computer as the host?

I think their is Ethernet to USB out their currently but not USB to ethernet. I dont see any reason why you should not be able to hook up your USB modem to your XP computer and use it as a bridge to the 98 computer.

Of course, it would be nicer to have an all-in-one unit, but you can accomplish your goal with this equipment. You cannot use cable adapters to convert the modem's USB into Ethernet. USB needs drivers to operate, and Ethernet connections do not provide those drivers to the device. you could also connect the modem to the XP machine and bridge connections, yes. but you can leave the system the way it is and configure it to run smoothly like this:

If I had the hardwear in front of me, it would be easier to provide specifics... but i can probly give you an idea of what to do. There are only 2 steps here:

1. configure an internet gateway.
2. configure the router.
And the rest is easy.

1. Set up the internet machine to SHARE AN INTERNET CONNECTION (you can use the wizard if you want, or just enable Internet Connection Sharing), which will turn the 98 into an internet gateway. that gateway needs an IP address designated, however. In essence, the 98 machine will be the internet server, so the IP of the 98 machine is the IP of the gateway. Assign an address, for example: 192.168.1.1 to the 98 machine. the "192.168" is important, and the last strings you can stretch on, but for the sake of ease lets keep it small. *TIP* the subnet mask will always be 255.255.255.0. okay that takes care of the host machine.

2. after you have an internet gateway, connect the wireless router, and console (or IP) in to the settings, usually by going into internet explorer and typing 192.168.0.1 into the address bar, and look for a slot for Internet Gateway. Type the address assigned in step 1. thats that for the router. (there may be other settings necessary for your specific network, and if there are, be sure to configure those.)

Lastly a few housekeeping tasks. make sure the workgroup for both machines is identical. I usually use MSHOME as the workgroup. Also make sure that on the XP machine, your IP address is set to "Automatically Obtain IP address", also known as DHCP.

Tips That help To increase Your Disk Space

1.      Monitor your file space: There are lots of tools that can tell you which files and folders consume the most space on your computer and where they are located. Armed with this information, you can decide what to get rid of. There of the best are JDisk Report (www.jgoodies.com), WinDirStat (http://winddirstat.info) and Disktective (www.disktective.com). All are free to download and display their findings in a clear, easy-to-understand manner.

2.      Run Disk Cleanup
An obvious tool to try when your hard disk is running short of space is Windows’ built-in Disk Cleanup. The program will calculate how much disk space you can free up. Wait until the ‘files to delete’ list appears, then select every item and click OK. There’s nothing here that you can’t live without and you can reclaim a surprising amount.

3.      Empty the Recycle Bin
Deleted files can occupy many gigabytes of disk space without you realizing. To stop them accumulating and taking up valuable room, first right-click the Recycle Bin on your Desktop and select the Empty option to delete the Bin’s contents. Right click it again and this time select Properties, Reduce the space allocated to the Recycle Bin to 1GB and click OK to confirm.

4.      Compress your files
Windows can compress files on your hard disk to reduce the amount space require. Right-click a file and choose Properties, then click the Advanced button and select the option to ‘Compress contents to save disk space’. Click OK and OK again. This trick works even better when you right-click a folder as you’ll be prompted to apply compression to all its files and subfolders. Go ahead – it won’t adversely affect their contents. Personally I also use it.

5.      Zip files up
If there are files that you don’t use regularly, you can zip them up. Compressing them in this way can, with certain files, save more than 50 per cent of the original space they used. Right-click a file or folder and select Send To, then ‘Compressed (zipped) Folder’. Delete the original afterwards.
6.      Remove optional components
Getting rid of Windows components that you don’t use helps to reclaim disk space. In XP, click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup. When the Disk Cleanup window appears, click the More Options tab and then select Clean Up in the Windows Components section. Some entries contain multiple items, such as Accessories and Utilities, so select them and click the Details button to choose the items you want to keep or remove. You can restore components from your installation disc (if you have one) if you later decide you need them.

7.      Limit System Restore
System Restore lets you undo changes that have been made to Windows, such as when you install new software or hardware. It’s a worth reducing the amount of space allocated to System Restore. In XP, click Start>Right-click My Computer and select Properties. Click the System Restore tab and then drag the slider bar to the left to reduce the disk space usage. Set the slider to 1000MB, which is a good compromise between necessary back-ups and the amount of space used.
In Vista, click Start, right-click Computer and select Properties. Click System Protection and clear the tick against the relevant disk drive. Click Apply and then OK, but note first that this removes all restore points (backups), so you should only proceed if your PC is working well. Click system Protection again but this time tick the box next to the disk drive. The space used by System Restore will now be considerably reduced.

8.      Limit IE’s cache
Internet Explorer can use up to 1GB of disk space to store recently accessed web pages. To stop these from building up in the browser’s cache, click Tools and choose Internet Options>Click the Settings button in the ‘Browsing history’ section of the General tab and set the disk to use to 50.

9.      Uninstall software
Old software that you no longer use can consume lots of space. Open ‘Add or Remove Programs’ in the Control Panel (XP) or ‘Programs and Features’ (Vista & 7), and choose the option to sort installed programs by size. This will help you identify the biggest space hogs. You can then uninstall any greedy programs that you don’t need anymore.

10.    Use online storage
Microsoft’s Windows Live SkyDrive service (http://skydrive.live.com) provides 5GB of free online storage space for documents, music, photos and videos. Sign up and upload seldom-used files from your hard disk and you’ll have up to 5GB more space to play with. There are many equally good free alternatives, including Adrive (www.adrive.com) and Humyo (www.humyo.com).

You can use Cloud OS’s for online storage like Glide OS (10GB of free online storage) or G.ho.st (15GB of free storage)

Block Websites Without Using Any Software

Steps:

Story behind names – Intel, Yahoo, Microsoft

Intel
Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore are the founders of Intel. Initially they wanted to name it as “Moore Noyce” Later they found that there was another company with that name which ran a group of hotels. Therefore, they decided to look for another name.  Then they were toying with the name ‘More Noise’. They thought, for a semiconductor company this name could be a wrong name. Then for the first year they used ‘NM Electronics’ as their company name. Finally, Intel got its name as a short form of INTegreated ELectorinics.
Microsoft
Bill Gates named Microsoft from two words. Microcomputer and Software. In year 1975, Bill Gates wrote a letter to his colleague Paul Allen, he wrote as Micro-Soft. But in 1976 they registered the name Microsoft as a single name.
Yahoo
The first name of Yahoo was “Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web”. In 1994 it changed its name to Yahoo. The name was taken from  a phrase from Jonathan Swift’s novel, Gulliver’s Travels. YAHOO is the short form of the phrase “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle”.  This word refers to a barbaric and uncivilized youth. The founders Jerry Yang and David Filo wanted to choose this name as they wanted themselves to be wittingly categorized thus.

Converts digital images to text ..

Looking for a free way to take your digital images of documents and convert them to editable text? This freeware application specializes in images taken with digital cameras and smartphones. From the developer:
Can your camera or smartphone replace a scanner for document capture with OCR? The answer is a resounding YES! TopSoft, Ltd, a leading developer of OCR and image processing software has created an application specifically for OCR data capture with digital cameras and smartphones called TopOCR. TopOCR uses the latest most powerful neural net pattern recognition and digital signal processing techniques for the best possible OCR results from digital cameras. This OCR technology is the result of years of research and development in the United States and Europe. Unlike OCR applications designed for scanners, TopOCR understands that images from digital cameras and smartphones have more variation in image quality. As a result, the OCR processing in TopOCR is more robust and utilizes sophisticated image processing algorithms that the older OCR programs completely lack. After a lot of testing, and feedback from early users, many people feel that OCR document capture based on digital cameras will be the wave of the future.

Modem TroubleShooting

-Modems like everything else do go nuts on you. For the most part the troubles are just with the software driver or just invalid settings. There is also a chance that another device is conflicting with the modem you have. For some reason my mouse has come into this picture before causing problems. If you are experiencing a problem with your modem such as conflicts with resources, try changing COM ports. This can fix your problem in most cases. If this doesn't help or you think that your modem is software related, reinstall the modem's driver. This can be done with the software that came with the modem.

-Change Com Ports-
  1. At start menu click settings
  2. Click control panel
  3. click modem's
  4. highlight your modem and then click properties
  5. select a unused COM port for the modem and hit OK
-If you are having problems with dialing your internet provide check and make sure the properties are correct in your dial up networking.
  1. At start menu
  2. click programs
  3. click accessories
  4. click communications or dial up networking
-This varies from windows 95 and 98. If lost go to settings>control panel> dial up networking.

      5.  Double click your ISP (internet service provider) connection. Verify all information on the tabs is correct with your ISP.

This seems to be the most common problem when connecting to the internet. It usually is a IP number that is wrong or not added. You may have your login name wrong or password.

-If you are having problems with a faulty driver or just plain don't have one. You can reinstall or install one this way. There are other methods that are easier. Try using the installation disk first. If this don't work then do it manually.
  1. At start menu click settings
  2. Click control panel
  3. click system
  4. click device tab
  5. click on your modem in the list
  6. click for properties of the modem
  7. click update drive or a driver tab
  8. have installation disk ready let it search for the driver and reinstall it for you.

Remove Startup Scripts in XP

Startup scripts are programs that are set to start whenever the computer boots up. By accessing the startup menu settings, you can decide what programs you want to allow to start when the computer starts and which ones you don’t.
This System Configuration panel is easy to access, but unless you know exactly what script you want to disable on startup, you shouldn’t use it without consulting a professional, lest you accidentally damage the operating system, rendering it inoperable.
Instructions
1.Press the “Start” button, click the “Run” option and type in “MSCONFIG” and then hit the Enter key.
2.Click the “Startup” tab and scroll through the list of startup programs and scripts until you find the startup script that you wish to remove from the list.
3.Uncheck the checkbox next to the name of the script you’re removing and then click the “Apply” button. Click the “OK” button and then choose whether to restart the computer immediately or wait until later. You must restart the computer in order to apply the settings you have selected.

What Is 64-Bit OS?

A 64-bit operating system is one that can process information in 64 bits instead of the smaller, standard 32 bits. A 64-bit operating system is available for modern computers, and it can improve the speed of a machine as long as the machine supports it.

Advantage
The 64-bit operating system refers to the amount of information the processor can handle concurrently. A 64-bit processor can process 64 bits of ones and zeros at the same time. A 32-bit processor can only process 32 ones and zeros at a time, which makes it slower.
Requirements
To install a 64-bit operating system, your processor needs enough memory to handle the amount of information. It works best if you have large amounts of random access memory (RAM).
Considerations
64-bit operating systems require 64-bit drivers for the computer. Therefore, when upgrading, you must download a 64-bit driver from the manufacturer.
Software
32-bit software can be run on a computer running a 64-bit operating system. However, software developed specifically for a 64-bit machine is not backward compatible.
Operating Systems
Microsoft Windows is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. Mac and Linux also support 64-bit architectures.

How to Find Your Internet IP Address

IP stands for internet protocol. Every device that is connected to the internet has a unique identification number, which is the IP address. There are several tools and websites that can assist you in finding your IP address. You don’t need to use any web site or third-party application to find your IP address. Instead, you can simply use the command line on your computer to display the IP address.

1.Power on your computer and click “Start” and then “Run.” This opens the run box where you can enter a command.

2.Type in “CMD” into the run box and press “Enter” on your keyboard. The command line window opens.

3.Type in “IP Config” into the command line and press “Enter” on your keyboard.

4.View and write down your IP address. The IP address will be displayed and labeled as “IP Address” or “IPv6 Address.” A sample IP address might look like “191.41.2.1.”

Create a Network Between Two Computers.

The days of difficult home network set-ups are over. The latest operating systems are all designed to connect to networks in a plug-and-play fashion, though a few additional steps may need to be taken to connect to a wireless network. Setting up a network between two computers is as easy as connecting an Ethernet cable between the two, but connecting through a router will allow for greater functionality, such as Internet and printer sharing, and the ability to add more computers.

1.Connect the modem carrying your Internet signal to a central hub or router. You may choose to use either a wireless router, or a router with Ethernet connections. Some routers have both.

2.Connect each computer to the router either wirelessly or using an Ethernet cable. If using a wireless router you must first establish the wireless connection. In Windows, run the “Set Up a Wireless Router or Access Point” wizard located in the “Network and Internet” section of the Control Panel on the network’s central computer. You will need to temporarily connect to the router with an Ethernet cable to run the wizard and successfully set up the wireless connection.

3.Run the “Set Up a Wireless Router or Access Point” wizard from the second computer to connect it to the network. If connected via an Ethernet cable the network should already be established.
